Hi to anyone who finds their way to this VERY new website.
I’ve been “around” mountain bikes since they became “invented” in the mid-1980’s and I’ve kept a keen interest in the technology of mountain bike design ever since. My sons and I raced in BMX through it’s formation years from late 70’s for a decade or so and that is where the mountain bike bug interest came from.
I remember the very first MTB that came on the scene at that time in the 80’s and it was little more than a hybrid road bike then. No suspension back or front, knobby tires based on BMX design and a relaxed geometry and of course a little more strength built in all round which meant more weight of course. And ever since the advancement in technology has always had weight as a primary concern; whatever the component they were inventing or improving.
I’ve been scouring the sites where mountain bikes can be found for sale “as an addict” ever since. Just reading about them and the riding tests (and now the YouTube videos) gets me excited.
So I’m a bit weird but I’ve become a real “pro” at determining what are the features you need to look for when it comes to riding the trails on a reliable mountain bike. For the bikes I chose on this website I base my detective work on features as well as price. Quality components, quality workmanship, sometimes the manufacturer is important, sometimes not. I also like to find out what is being said about different makes and models.
No WalMart or general department store specials here. (Unless they have a “special” section where they sell REAL mountain bikes; not just some cheap crap set-up to look like a mountain bike). Having said that, I’ve added heaps of other stuff under different categories here, including different categories of mountain bikes. After all, you might have a wife or a girlfriend, or a child, that needs a bike other than a typical terrain type mountain bike. And we ALL need accessories whatever the sort of bike. (Just so I’m not seen as sexist, if you’re a lady reading this then YOU might have a husband or boyfriend who is a little “precious” that might want a more “toned down” style of bike as well …. after all we are not all fearless down-hillers or maniac canyon jumpers).
Now I’m not (what I call) a “mountain bike maniac”. But I’m not “precious” either. If you don’t know what I mean by being a maniac just type in “Red Bull” and “mountain bike” and you’ll get the picture. (Or look at some of the awesome footage on YouTube ingeneral about this sport and the talent of the top level riders). This will take you to some awesome (scary??) videos, all related to amazing footage of committed souls WAY braver than I, who do incredible things on / with mountain bikes. Of course once you have found those videos you will find some other great viewing by some awesome mountain bikers.
I admire them all, I love the videos, but I would love to live a LOT …… not just a little longer.
Just being inside that camera on their helmet or watching through the lens of the great cinematographers that take this amazing footage is enough of an adrenaline rush for me; when it comes to that sort of extreme mountain biking.
Don’t get me wrong; my riding buddies and myself are no wimps; we do a little more than ride the graded fire trails. Something a bit rockier and rougher is what we like …. a bit challenging ……. always a great buzz.
A few scratches, grazes and bruises is always “on the cards” when my little group hit the bush. And we hit the real bush mate!! We ride the trails in the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney, Australia. As I say, I’ve watched some great downhill tracks on video and apart from the maniac jumps (which we avoid) our tracks are often as challenging in terms of a rough ride, but our downhill trails are also (mostly) a lot shorter … we don’t have the sort of elevation in Australia that some of the featured overseas tracks boast and so there are always limits to how long our downhill experience lasts.
We also all have commitments (like earning an income and taking care of families) outside of our riding and can’t afford to get too mad !! But that is the point, great fun is when you can challenge yourself but still come out of the experience relatively unscathed. We need to be able to “limp” into work on Monday morning or crawl to the kitchen to do the dishes after dinner. (Yes we also have a boss at home called a wife).
And that is the criteria I use when I scour the internet looking for bikes that interest me.
Besides that, after a hard mornings riding we like to be able to get back to our favorite cafe for that coffee break …….. not the same atmosphere in the Hospital Emergency Ward.
So I’ve started this blog to just record what I’ve been researching. …………Why?
Because my memory is crap and here is all my research “stuff” (relating to anything about bicycles) in one place so I can find it whenever I want AND …….. because mountain biking is a huge growth sport / recreation at the moment and as soon as anyone knows that you are involved (me and my buddies) the questions start.
What bike do you ride? Where should I go to look? How many gears do you need? Is it dangerous? Where can you go riding around here?
This website is just my easy (lazy) way of dealing with it. I just keep adding interesting “stuff” here; plead short term memory loss issues to anyone who starts asking questions and give them this web site address.
Useful “mountain bike related” information will slowly build on this website as I add more research results.
The reader can make their own decision as to how useful this information is.
If there is some info about a particular bike or bike product on Amazon I think might be of general interest I’ll dump it on this website ; and naturally I’m going to have some sort of link if you like what you see so you can click to go to the actual Amazon page to have a look for yourself. If I’m an awesome judge of mountain bikes, other bikes or bike accessories and you decide to purchase from my review then I might earn a few dollars. (And that is ALL it is when you recommend an Amazon product …… maybe enough to buy that coffee).
Do you think I’m stupid? Wouldn’t you be happy to get an extra dollar here and there for the time you spend researching your passion? …….. Its not like I’m trying to rob you. You will pay the exact price that is quoted on this on the Amazon page that features whatever product you decide to purchase. All I’m doing is I’m looking through all the bike related categories and dumping the info here, letting you know the features of the product and if they are going for a good price. OFTEN THEY WILL BE ON A SPECIAL PRICE …. AND I’LL LET YOU KNOW IF THAT IS SO. Because my information will automatically update every time Amazon updates. Amazon let us do this and pay us a few dollars (or sometimes a few cents, depending on the price of the product) if you go to Amazon by clicking on the product you are looking at on this site.
So bottom line is …….. my research information about products is from the technical data I gather from different sources about that particular product. I will also have general bike related information and articles and that will be sourced from experts, with little commentary from me. As well as technical info my bike reviews will also contain input from reliable contributors ……. like pro-riders or mountain bike tragics who know their stuff.
Hope you enjoy the content and even better …… LEARN STUFF !!
Don’t forget; this is a new website so if you think it is a bit “thin” on information at the moment don’t forget to drop by again in a little while as I will try to keep the information coming.
